AUCKLAND FC head coach Luke Casserly has praised his players after they sealed top spot in the OFC Pro League round robin phase with a 2-0 win over Hekari United FC at 4R Stadium at Govind Park yesterday.

“I am so proud of this group and this is a great achievement for these players,” Casserly said.

“We have used the whole squad, everyone has played their part, this is a massive effort from everyone.”

Auckland FC made it two wins from two in Round 5, controlling much of the match in a top-versus-bottom clash.

The New Zealand side knew victory would cement their place at the summit ahead of the league split, while Hekari were chasing momentum heading into the Challengers Group.

Striker Oscar Faulds was a constant threat early but missed a good opportunity after failing to control the ball in space inside the box. Midfielder Isa Prins also came close, forcing goalkeeper Dave Tomare into a sharp save late in the first half.

The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Reid Drake delivered a looping cross from a corner, finding Faulds at the far post. The striker made no mistake, guiding a well-placed header over Tomare into the net.

Auckland FC continued to press after the break, and substitute Liam Gillion made an instant impact. After another set-piece from Drake was only partially cleared, Gillion showed neat footwork before curling a low shot past Tomare in the 49th minute to double the lead.

Hekari showed brief signs of a fightback, with Judahbill Asar denied from close range by goalkeeper Blake Callinan. Later, Rex Naime used his pace to test Callinan again, but the Auckland shot-stopper held firm.

Hekari struggled to create clear chances as Auckland maintained control.

The result ensures Auckland FC finish the regular season on top of the table with two matches to spare, as both teams now turn their attention to the next phase of the competition.
