Viriviri claims gold

Dratabu, Nadi lass Vikaili Viriviri of Mount St. Mary’s Primary School swam for glory in the girls 9-10 100m backstroke at the Fiji National Schools Swimming Championships in Suva yesterday.

Viriviri finished with a time of one minute and 48.86 seconds, swimming with a dominant command against her competitors.

Following her race, she got out of the pool and walked over to jump into the 25m pool at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre to warm down as her coach and manageress came over to congratulate her for a job well done.

Speaking to Times Sport, Viriviri was excited in relaying how she felt about her win yesterday.

“I would like to thank the Lord for winning the race today (yesterday) and my parents and supporters for cheering on me,” Viriviri said.

Heading into this race, she recalled feeling nervous about how she would fare in the pool however she credited her faith in God as a key driver towards her win.

“I was really nervous and shy coming out to compete today but I prayed to God and sought His guidance which led me to win the race today (yesterday),” she mentioned.

Meanwhile, for Viriviri, the swimming championship also marks her second visit to the Capital City.

The young swimmer said the preparations for her events in the championship progressed well.
