DOMESTIC violence in homes continues to be suppressed by close family members of the victims.

Speaking during the Women Defend Commons symposium at Vunisea Secondary School in Kadavu last week, Diverse Voices and Action for Equality or DIVA for Equality’s executive director Noelene Nabulivou said these violent acts were kept in homes.

Ms Nabuivou said victims were often told by their very own mothers to forgive their assailants; normally their own partners and to be strong for their children.

She said father-in-laws were the worst in these types of situations because they chose to be silent listeners, choosing to conceal the violence that went on within their homes.

She also told participants at the symposium that husbands forcing their partners to have joint Facebook accounts or sharing of earnings were forms of controls that men had over their wives.

She said these were forms of patriarchy practiced in our society.

Symposium participant Shelene Lata said even though many women followed the wishes of their husbands faithfully, they did not realise that these were forms of controls that were used widely in society.

Ms Lata said the symposium was truly an eye opener for women from across the country.
