Nabuna villagers of Cawa district on Koro Island are cautiously optimistic about the establishment of a five-star hotel on their land.
While they’ve welcomed the development because of its potential to create jobs and generate economic opportunities, they’re also wary of possible negative impacts on the marine ecosystem.
Mata ni tikina (district rep) Cawa, Sekaia Bolabola said the planned hotel development would boost economic activity and bring employment opportunities for their youths.
“We are looking forward to the five-star hotel that will be established here in Nabuna,” Mr Bolabola said.
“It will be owned and developed by overseas business people.”
However, Mr Bolabola said while the potential project was welcome news, it was just as important to emphasise the vulnerability of the marine ecosystem.
“A lot of development is coming through, however, we hope our marine ecosystem is maintained in the process,” he said.
“That is something to discuss later.”
Mr Bolabola said the development would be a great employment opportunity for the people.
“Of course, we support this new development.
“It’ll encourage our youths to work here, find employment and keep their minds off getting involved in negative social issues.”
Mr Bolabola said work on the hotel project would commence soon, probably in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, a feasibility study has been carried out on a proposed jetty in Nabuna that promises easy access for business operators and villagers.
