WAINIYABIA villagers in Serua are appealing to the public to dispose their rubbish responsibly when visiting the village’s picnic areas.

The concern was raised by local resident Ben Nayacalevu, who said there had been a noticeable increase in rubbish left behind by visitors from outside the community.

Mr Nayacalevu said careless waste disposal was damaging the area’s natural environment, particularly during peak holiday periods.

“We are urging members of the public this festive season to dispose of their rubbish properly,” he said.

“Our natural surroundings are being degraded by visitors from other parts of Fiji. Please respect and protect our environment.”

Residents reported a rise in plastic waste, food packaging and other litter being left at popular picnic spots.

Mr Nayacalevu warned that continued littering could block nearby waterways, harm marine life and have long-term environmental impacts.

He urged visitors to be mindful of their actions, reminding them to take their rubbish home or use designated disposal bins where available.
