Nabukelevu Village in Serua took a step towards environmentally responsible living yesterday after receiving 20 compost bins to strengthen waste management at the community level.

The bins were handed over by the Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya, as part of the Government’s efforts to promote sustainable practices in rural communities.

Two of the 20 compost bins were presented to Burenitu Village School, aimed at instilling environmental awareness among students and encouraging responsible behaviour from a young age.

During the handover, Ms Tabuya urged students to take pride in their surroundings and to play an active role in protecting the environment by disposing of rubbish properly and reminding others to do the same.

“When you go to the rivers to get your food or swim, always take your rubbish back with you, like your bongo and noodle packets,” she told the students.

“If you see your elders throwing rubbish in an improper way, please tell them.”

Ms Tabuya also spoke about the negative impact of pesticide use on the environment, encouraged students to work hard in their studies, and reminded them of the importance of staying connected to their cultural roots.
