Vibose for Masters event

FORMER Fiji South Pacific Games gold medallist Mereoni Vibose will represent Fiji to the World Masters Athletics Championship (WMAC) which will be held in Perth, Australia from October 26 to November 2.

The 1998 Fiji Sports Hall of Fame inductee said she received the news of the competition through an old friend and former Australian javelin champion, Mary Thomas last year.

“I will be taking part in four events at the championships; javelin, shot put, discus and hammer throw,” Vibose said.

Since last year, she has been training at her village in Raiwaqa in Nadroga.

She said she had been training using a javelin and a discus, but for shot put she had to resort to getting a rock from the Ruwailevu River which ran beside her village for her training.

“All of the first three events’ equipments I have, but as for the hammer throw I will try it during the competition.”

She said all her expenses for the competition were paid for by her family who been supportive in her preparation.

Vibose said the WMAC categorised participating athletes to compete in their various age-groups.

“For instance anyone from the age of 65 to 69 will not be eligible to compete in the 70-74 age category.”

She expects to finish among the top 10 in her category by the end of the championship.
