Vodafone Fiji U23 rep Iosefo Verevou and Molly Esther of Special Olympics were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of 2015.
They were announced during the 2015 Fiji Sports Award at the Vodafone Arena last Friday night..
The night was filled with entertainment and speeches from chief guest Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and guest speaker Shane Gould.
Weightlifting Fiji scooped four awards.
Along with winning the Sports Organisation of the Year award, Weightlifting Fiji’s Josefa Vueti was named 2015 Coach of the Year, Della Shaw the 2015 Sports Technical Official of the Year and Eileen Cikamatana named 2015 Young Female Athlete of the Year.
Vueti was surprised by the feat.
“It is a surprise win for me, especially after what happened during Cyclone Winston. Our HPU was badly damaged and this is a boost to me, especially in preparing the team to the Oceania Championship next month,” he said.
He said the awards they won were a positive reflection on the work they did in developing the sport.
“I am happy and I believe all the nominees were winners. The awards showed the potential that our athletes have and especially our administration. My win is for the people of Ovalau, especially after the tragedy of Winston and I think it will put a smile back on the faces of the people back home,” he said.
