MEMBERS of the Velovelo Satsang Ramayan Mandali marked the festival of colours, Holi, yesterday by singing traditional songs through parts of Lautoka City.

With their dolak and colourful garbs, the singers spread the spirit of the festival in true Holi fashion.

Mandali treasurer Sanjay Goundar said the festival of colours was an important event in the Hindu calendar.

He said it was important for believers to spread the spirit of the festival as it signified a new beginning and the end of a season.

“It signifies a new beginning for us and it was important for us to go to all of these places to celebrate with our neighbours and members of our community,” he said.

“It marks the triumph of good over evil. The colours also have a special meaning especially in this modern day and age.

“Each colour represents different people, races and religion coming together in unity.

“This is a month-long festival which we celebrate and today (yesterday) was a culmination of this event and we wanted to include everyone in our happiness.”
