Government is reviewing its transport policies, including possible limits on vehicle imports and age restrictions, as part of efforts to ease growing congestion on Fiji’s roads.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed that a comprehensive policy paper has been commissioned to reassess how vehicles enter and operate within the country.
“I’ve asked the Director of Transport to prepare that paper in terms of transport policies that need to be updated, the optimum number of vehicles, what type of vehicles, and the age of vehicles,” Ro Filipe said.
He said authorities were considering whether Fiji should introduce a maximum vehicle age, alongside tighter controls around licensing and the overall regulatory framework governing transport.
“The whole framework is under review, so I’m waiting for that from the Director of Transport and I’m asking them to get it done quickly so that there’s further discussion.”
The review comes amid rising public concern about increasing traffic volumes, particularly in urban centres, and the strain placed on existing infrastructure.
Ro Filipe says once the report is submitted, consultations will be held with industry stakeholders and the public before any policy decision is finalised.
“There will also be consultations with stakeholders and that is something that we will progress in the next two to four weeks,” he said.
The review is aimed at ensuring Fiji’s transport system remains sustainable while balancing accessibility, safety and economic needs as vehicle ownership continues to grow.
