VATUWAQA retained the Tui Suva Shield yesterday after beating Suvavou 22-15 at Albert Park in Suva.
The side was awarded the shield and a complimentary ball.
Despite the one-match competition not having any prize money, the two teams understood that it was more than that.
Vatuwaqa rugby captain Ovini Bokini said this match is quite significant for both teams.
“We were preparing for this match for a month. While we were playing in our club games for Nasinu where we reached the quarter-finals, we were also preparing for this match and I want to commend the boys for giving their best and getting the win.
“We’ve always heard stories from our elders who played this game and we are glad that we got to be the next generation of players who got to continue this tradition.
“We’ve also just recently discovered that there is a yavusa in Suvavou that is named Vatukoula which is the factor that links the two communities,” he said.
Vatuwaqa’s rugby season now comes to an end as they look forward to another next year.
