Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu says he respects the decision of the High Court on the disputed Tui Nadi title.

Speaking to this newspaper about the decision made by the High Court in Lautoka last month, Mr Vasu said the ministry has had discussions on the decision with State lawyers.

“We have already had discussions with the Solicitor-General’s Office and that is our stand for now and that is we respect the ‘vanua’ (traditional leadership set-up) and the court decision,” said Mr Vasu.

“We will go with it, and we will go with the process.”

When asked if the title of the Tui Nadi at this point in time was vacant, Mr Vasu said “it has been decided by the court”.

Last week, the S-G’s office indicated it would be appealing the decision made by Justice Mohammed Mackie on March 18.

“The Office of the Solicitor-General maintains the highest standards in all legal matters,” the S-G’s office said a statement.

“While we respect the court’s decision in this particular case, it is important to note that the State has previously secured four favourable judgments on the same legal and factual issues in the previous year.”
