Vanuatu wants to play running rugby in Oceania event

THE Vanuatu U20 rugby players have a massive task ahead of them in the Oceania Rugby Junior Trophy Championship in Suva.

Their task starts by facing Fiji and for many of the ni-Vanuatu players their rugby idols are Fijians.

Captain Aquila Kalsakau said they were here to play rugby and not make up the numbers.

“We are probably the smallest team here but we will be matching any team we face in skills and enthusiasm,” Kalsakau said.

“For most of the players, this is the first time to be here in Fiji and get to see first-hand what Fijian rugby is all about.

“We are hoping to spread the ball and play running rugby. We have a game plan against a team probably favoured to win this game.”

Kalsakau said the experience gained from Fiji would be immense as well.

“Most boys are local based players with the exception of five of us who are schooling in New Zealand,” he said.

The Hamilton Boys School rugby player said they anticipated a tough game against Fiji tomorrow.

The games start at 3pm today with Tonga facing Papua New Guinea in the first game and then Fiji takes on Vanuatu at 5pm at the ANZ Stadium.
