FIJI women’s cricket team braces for a tough challenge in their final pool match against Vanuatu, for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia–Pacific Qualifier, taking place at Albert Park in Suva today.
Team Fiji began on a positive note, clinching a convincing nine-wicket victory over the Cook Islands.
However, they faced a setback in their second pool match, succumbing to a 42-run defeat against Indonesia.
Vanuatu boasts an unbeaten run, securing a recent victory over Indonesia by seven runs.
Team manager Mereani Uluiviti acknowledged the upcoming match as a challenging one, stressing the importance of teamwork and a strong performance to secure victory against a skilled Vanuatu side.
She highlighted the need to focus on improving fielding to contain the opposition’s scoring and enhance their chances of success.
“It will be a challenging match, and the girls are looking forward for it,” said Uluiviti.
“Vanuatu as we know, they are a very good side, we have played them already in the past few tournaments, and we just need to work together as a team and get the win.”
She added the team benefitted from the contributions of two overseas-based players, adding experience and skill to their lineup.
“It’s also great to see a big support from the crowd, I hope we can have a lot of numbers on Friday as we play our final pool match.”
Tabatha Saville, an overseas-based player making her debut for Team Fiji, expressed her excitement at the opportunity to represent her country after years in Australia.
She emphasised the camaraderie and support she has received from her teammates, underlining her dedication to contribute to a successful outcome in the upcoming match against Vanuatu.
Fiji will face Vanuatu today at 1.30pm.
