THE Basketball Fiji boys and girls’ teams achieved great success and valuable lessons at the FIBA U17 Oceania Cup in Samoa, over the weekend.
Interim chief of operations William Peters praised the teams for their impressive performances, with the boys’ team securing fifth place by defeating Cook Islands 89-81 and the girls’ team triumphing over Guam with a score of 75-51.
Peters commended the teams for their determination and hard work throughout the competition, stating that they had set their goals and successfully achieved them.
“The team played their best in the competition, we did set our goals and achieved it, even though we didn’t get the win in the final, but the team really showed their determination through out,” said Peters.
He adds the experience gained by the U17 teams in Samoa was valuable, as it was their first time competing in this tournament.
“The team learnt a lot of things, this is a first time we took a U17 team to compete, so it was a great exposer for them, and its all about doing better in years to come.”
As the final competition for 2025, Peters expressed pride in the teams’ performance and highlighted the successful year for Basketball Fiji.
“It has been a great year for Basketball Fiji, we had a lot of overseas competitions, and secondary school’s competition, we are happy with all our results, and we hope for a bigger and better 2026.”
He credited the support of partners and sponsors, including the Fiji National Sports Commission, Vodafone Fiji, Fiji Sports Council, and others, for their contributions to the teams’ success.
Peters extended gratitude to the parents and families of the U17 players for their unwavering support and sacrifices, acknowledging the crucial role they play in the teams’ journeys.
