The Government has confirmed that Cabinet has endorsed a detailed analysis of the Valelevu Ground as the proposed site for Fiji’s new national hospital, following a multi-criteria assessment of several potential locations.
A statement said the new hospital forms a key component of the CWM Hospital Redevelopment Project, supported by the Australian Government, which is assisting Fiji in developing a comprehensive infrastructure master plan for the national referral hospital.
In addition to the master plan, Australia has committed grant funding for urgent upgrades at CWM Hospital.
Phase one works—covering roof leak repairs, acute ward upgrades, and potable water and sewer remediation—are already underway and scheduled for completion in early 2026.
A second phase of priority upgrades will follow to ensure the hospital remains operational, alongside further assessments for long-term redevelopment.
The World Bank is also progressing plans to construct a new radiotherapy centre at a separate CWM site, aimed at improving access to cancer treatment and supporting services.
