AT a time when the Flying Fijians are facing fresh injury concerns in the midfield, Virimi Vakatawa proving he still has the class and power to compete at the highest level despite the Barbarians’ crushing 80-31 defeat to the Springboks on Saturday.

The former France international started at outside centre for the Barbarians and showed glimpses of the explosive form that once made him one of the most feared midfielders in world rugby.

Vakatawa’s performance was enough to remind fans and selectors of the quality he still possesses.

More importantly, it showed that his wealth of experience and natural talent can still make him a serious threat on the international stage.

Fellow Fijian Drua utility back Tuidraki Samusamuvodre made his Barbarians debut off the bench in the second half.

Thrown into an already fast-paced and open contest, Samusamuvodre found it tough to impose himself as the Springboks maintained their dominance until fulltime.

Still, the experience will add another valuable chapter to the young back’s development as he continues to push his case for higher honours.

For Fiji, Vakatawa’s performance may be the bigger takeaway.

With Habosi’s injury leaving questions over the Flying Fijians midfield options ahead of the upcoming Test window, the veteran’s display was a clear reminder that he still has plenty to offer.
