RETURNING to the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua setup has given Virimi Vakatawa a renewed sense of purpose one centred on leadership and lifting those around him.

Fresh from an influential performance in the Drua’s 24-22 win over the Western Force, where he sliced through the defence with powerful runs and strong ball carries, Vakatawa now shifts his focus to this weekend’s Round 10 clash against the ACT Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Canberra.

But beyond the physical impact he brings on the field, the experienced back sees his biggest role as guiding the next generation.

“Helping them out, I think that’s the main reason I want to come back and play for the Drua,” he said.

Vakatawa highlighted the importance of senior players stepping up, alongside the likes of Temo Mayanavanua, to support younger members in the squad.

“Help them and guide them throughout the season so it’s not only me, also Temo Mayanavanua is here and some other senior boys that are here and it’s a good thing, also help them in such a way that it can help them in their career.”

With the Drua aiming for consistency, Vakatawa said the team has been working hard during the week to address areas needing improvement ahead of the Brumbies match.

“Trying our best to come out with a win. During the week we have been talking about how we can change that, especially we have to come out with our best rugby.”

For the seasoned centre, giving back remains at the heart of his return.

“It’s important us senior players to join junior players who still have a long way to go, for me it’s important to give back.”

The Brumbies and Drua match kicks off at 9.35pm.
