A GARMENT factory in Nasinu has taken upon itself to help save the environment by limiting its power usage and substituting it with solar energy.

Mark One Apparel Pty Ltd, located in the Kalabu Tax Free Zone in Nasinu, uses 70 per cent electricity and 30 per cent solar power in its operations daily.

Managing director Mark Halabe said the solar energy had been used in the company’s operations for almost 10 years.

“We have solar panels on our roof and we’re a bit different from others,” he said.

“Other organisations that can put solar panels on their roof should consider it

“We use 30 per cent from our solar panels and 70 per cent from the street power because the sun needs to shine in the morning and shine in the afternoon and we won’t get that much sunshine in those times.”

Mr Halabe said using solar power was the “right thing to do”.

“I’d like to see one day, every house when I fly over Suva have a solar panel.

“We can’t keep burning fossil fuel so everybody who can do should look into it seriously about putting in their solar panel and reduce our carbon footprint.”

He added they were waiting for battery technology to become more affordable and they would probably use solar energy more in its operation.
