US reality show provides more exposure for Fiji

THE first episode of the Survivor Season 33 American reality television series that was shot in the Mamanuca Group was aired on Thursday (Fiji Time) to 9.25 million viewers in the US.

Film Fiji CEO Dallas Foon said the reality show Survivor will be distributed to affiliated networks in 140 countries.

However, he said Fiji had not acquired the licence to view this show in Fiji.

Members of the media, board members and team from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority were treated to lunch yesterday to view the first episode of the show.

Survivor is an American competitive reality television series produced by Jeff Probst, Mark Burnett and Charlie Parsons. Since the day it first aired in the year 2000, it has ranked as one of the most watched shows in the US and is considered the highest-rated and most profitable reality series on television.

In this reality series a group of strangers is isolated in a deserted location, where they must struggle to provide food, water, fire, shelter and any medical assistance necessary. At the same time, they compete in challenges to either earn immunity from expulsion from the game, or a reward. The last round of survivors left must face a jury of the contestants that have been previously eliminated.

The sole survivor wins a prize of $US1 million ($F2.05m).

The show is broadcast in 140 countries, including Fiji’s two biggest tourist markets Australia and New Zealand, and has a global audience of 120 million people.

This season, the competition will be between Millennials (which is considered anyone born between the early 1980s through 2000) and Gen X-ers (the generation born in between the early 1960s through the early 1980s.)

Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X kicked off with a 90-minute premiere episode on Wednesday, September 21 at 8/7c on CBS with 20 new castaways that will be competing for a chance at winning $1 million.

The first episode of the season, which had the added twist of having to film during Cyclone Zena, drew the largest audience in its time slot, with early data showing approximately 9.35 million people tuned in for the season premier.

Survivor Season 33 was filmed in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji in April and May 2016 with a foreign production crew of nearly 300 and local crew of another 300.
