A courtesy call from the ambassador of the United States of America to Fiji on Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has enabled a comprehensive dialogue on the innovative engagements that Fiji and the United States will closely pursue in rebuilding the economy and livelihoods.
Ambassador Joseph Cella congratulated Mr Bainimarama for his decisive leadership in keeping Fiji COVID contained and reinforced the United States support towards the Fijian Government endeavours to revive the Fijian economy.
“I am grateful for Prime Minister Bainimarama’s strong and transparent leadership exemplifies further the whole of the Government of Fiji’s engagement on the frontlines of this infernal and costly plague,” he said.
Mr Cella said a key step towards achieving this would be reinstating the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) and co-ordinating consultations with the Project Advisory Committee (PAC).
Mr Bainimarama thanked the United States for its commitment and support towards Fiji and the region in addressing the double burden of COVID-19 pandemic and climate change crisis.
He said transparency, multilateralism, and global solidarity were crucial for charting a concerted approach to containing COVID and redouble efforts for recovery.
Meanwhile, Mr Cella introduced the new country director Peace Corps Fiji Kury W Cobham, given her role in co-ordinating the Peace Corps Volunteers in Fiji.
