Villagers have reported dead fish in the Waimalika Creek, in Sabeto this morning.
The cause of the fish kill is unknown, and the Ministry of Environment is being urged to investigating and determine the source of the problem.
This is the second environmental disaster in the Sabeto region within months.
“Earlier this year, Lion One’s Gold Mine released toxic waste into the upper reaches of the Sabeto River, causing significant harm,” said a resident Ravoravo Rebel in a social media post.
“Despite efforts by the Tikina of Sabeto to address the issue, no compensation or restocking of freshwater livestock has been achieved, and the matter has lost momentum.”
“Community leaders are now calling for all Sabeto communities to unite in protecting their waterways.”
