FIJI Trades Union Congress president Daniel Urai is yet to confirm if he will resign from this post.
He recently resigned as general-secretary of the National Union of Hospitality, Catering and Tourism Industries Employees to contest the general election under the People’s Democratic Party banner.
“The FTUC president’s post is interesting because the decree is intended that we resign so that we are no longer employed,” Mr Urai said in Lautoka.
The Electoral Decree prohibits unionists from joining or holding office of political parties and while Mr Urai noted this provision for his resignation, he did not give definite confirmation about leaving the FTUC.
“My position on the FTUC is a non-paying position but if it even requires me to step down from a non-paying position, I will abide by that.”
He said the post of the FTUC presidency was voluntary and did not come with any perks.
“You don’t earn anything from it but we get elected from the position, based on our interest for serving the worker’s issues, the worker’s rights.”
