A major upgrade of the Labasa–Savusavu cross-island link road is now in progress, with authorities moving to curb what has become one of Fiji’s most troubling road-safety hotspots.
Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka said a design and supervision contract was awarded in May, marking the first step in an 11-month design phase before construction tenders are released.
“The project includes plans for safer road alignments, scenic lookouts, rest stops, navigational signage and improvements along the road leading to the Waisali Rainforest Reserve,” Mr Gavoka said.
He said the urgency of the upgrade reflects the rising number of crashes along the northern corridor.
“There are simply too many unnecessary accidents and fatalities on the Labasa–Savusavu roads.
“Through this program, we hope to reduce, if not eliminate, these incidents.
This is not just a problem here in the North but across Fiji, and it must be addressed.”
He said the improved route will also enhance the visitor experience while strengthening resilience in the North’s transport network.
