A MAJOR wastewater infrastructure upgrade project will be conducted along the Denarau Island – Navakai corridor.

The project is expected to resolve and address ongoing wastewater leakage issues reported by concerned residents and business operators in Nadi.

According to the Water Authority of Fiji, the long-term solution will be funded by government and include the replacement of the existing Regent Wastewater Pump Station and the DN250 AC.

“The project will provide a new and improved wastewater pumping station and appropriately designed rising main infrastructure, improving the reliability, capacity and resilience of the wastewater system servicing Denarau Island and the surrounding catchment,” a WAF statement said.

“The contract for these upgrade works has already been awarded, with the contractor mobilised and design works currently progressing.

“The overall project is expected to be completed within approximately two years.

“Once completed, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to significantly improve the reliability of wastewater conveyance between Denarau Island and the Navakai WWTP and provide a long-term solution to the recurring failures associated with the ageing existing infrastructure.”

Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Lawrence Kumar said this aging infrastructure should have been replaced years ago.

“We all know the Nadi wastewater treatment plants is inundated and its running beyond its capacity,” he said.

“It should have been replaced ages ago so it is a huge failure on the part of the Water Authority and the whole agencies that look after these types of infrastructure.

“We are quite concerned about this ongoing issue and hope there is immediate and permanent resolutions brought in so that it is dealt with once and for all.”
