Fijians celebrating Diwali tomorrow may need to keep umbrellas close, as the Fiji Meteorological Service is forecasting occasional rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds over several parts of the country.
A trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain lies to the north of Fiji and is drifting south, expected to affect the country over the next few days.
According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, easterly winds of up to 45 kilometres per hour are expected over the eastern half of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Rough seas are also likely.
Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast for Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, and the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu, including Suva, Nausori, and Tailevu North, which could dampen outdoor Diwali celebrations.
Forecasters warn that persistent localised heavy rain may cause flash flooding in low-lying areas, and the public is advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated on the latest weather advisories.
