United Nations Resident Coordinator visits islands on Lau

United Nations Resident Coordinator Sanaka Samarasinha was given a taste of Fijian tradition when welcomed by the people of Oneata, Lau last Thursday.

Mr Samarasinha was dressed up in a customary four-piece masi attire prepared by women of the island before he was accorded full traditional ceremonies of welcome.

He was also given similar treatment on Friday when he arrived on the island of Moce, whose women are renown as one the best masi producers in Fiji.

The senior international civil servant led a a joint UN-Government mission to central Lau last week.

Talking to villagers he empasised the importance of listening to the “voice” of the people.
