Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu has called on Parliament to unite in strengthening democracy and promoting inclusivity across Fiji’s diverse population.

Speaking during the 2025-2026 budget debate in Parliament on Monday, Mr Seruiratu said the nation’s progress depended on moving beyond adversarial politics.

“In this Parliament, adversarial politics should be a thing of the past,” he said.

“It is time that we focus on the common good and issues of national importance.”

He acknowledged the intent behind the theme of the budget — building security, stability and prosperity.

“The budget, premised on the theme of building securities, stability, and prosperity is well intended. And rightfully so because it is the role of all governments to protect its citizens, businesses, and the communities they serve.”

Mr Seruiratu said Fiji’s political and economic history had been shaped by instability and the ongoing need to build a competitive economy.

“We currently face challenges related to political tension, skills shortage, and the need for a business-friendly environment.

“While we cannot change the past, we still have the opportunity to influence the future of better.”
