The Native Lands Commission will set up a redefinition unit to look into customary land dispute issues in iTaukei villages.

This was made known to landowners of Ba by the commission chairman Ratu Vananalagi Vesikula during their recent provincial council meeting.

He informed chiefs and district representatives that the commission was and continued to be inundated with land boundary disputes, and it was proper that a unit was set up to handle such cases.

A chief pleaded with the commission to look into this area because land boundary disputes existed in most villages and Ba.

He claimed that such disputes had caused animosity among families, clans and villagers.

Ratu Vananalagi, in response, said the government was made aware of the commission’s plans to set up a unit for this. The NLC chairman has also pleaded with chiefs and elders of the province to speed up processes regarding the filling of customary and chiefly titles.

Ratu Vananalagi said a huge challenge the commission faced was the confirmation of leadership positions in iTaukei villages.

He also pleaded with chiefs and elders of Ba to follow processes in recording customary or chiefly titles so that they can be included in the commission’s record.
