WITH weekly cricket competitions for the under-19 girls well underway every Saturday, it is part of preparations to select a national team for a qualifier meet this April.

This was the word relayed by the development manager of Cricket Fiji, Joeli Mateyawa as the most recent round of competition unfolded at Albert Park in Suva yesterday.

Mateyawa said the aim was to select a team for the qualifiers to the 2027 Women’s Under-19 T-20 World Cup, slated to be held in Papua Nes Guinea in April this year.

“That’s what this competition is about, but overall, we do this program every year in the first term,” Mateyawa said.

He mentioned the competition consisted of matches for the under-19 boys and girls and others that covered primary schools and the senior categories.

He shared the under-19 competition in Suva was held simultaneously with the same in Nadi at Denarau.

According to him, six teams were competing there.

With the competition now well underway since it began, he added the pool of talented cricketers ranged from schools in the urban and rural areas.

“We have a lot of talents in the tournament, mostly from Tailevu North College, they’ve been here a couple of times and have come in numbers,” he highlighted.

“We also have those from the Lami corridor, (Suva) Grammar (School), ACS (Adi Cakobau School). They always dominate (and have) a lot of good talents in the competition.”

Meanwhile, schools such as Lami High School and Lomary Secondary School were competing at Albert Park yesterday.

Other participating schools included Lelean Memorial School, Suva Grammar School, John Wesley College and Tailevu North College.
