THE country’s newest inter-island ferry Uluda Princess (IMO 9075319) has arrived in the country.

Owned and operated by Interlink Shipping Line Ltd, the vessel has been dedicated primarily to the people of Rakiraki in the province of Ra.

The latest addition to Interlink Shipping’s fleet is part of a dream by company pioneer and patriarch, the late Ashok Kumar.

“It was a vision of late Mr Ashok Kumar and to operate from Ellington to support the people of Rakiraki and the West,” Interlink Shipping stated on its social media update.

“His strong connections with Rakiraki and his visions for the business will be carried out in time.”

Uluda Princess’ exterior body is painted with happy dolphins as a reminder of the importance of the Vatu-i-Ra Passage and the marine environment in sustaining life and supporting livelihoods.

“We must protect them and their ecosystems. Vessels that disturb their habitat must always be objected. It is our duty to protect,” Interlink Shipping further added.

The website www.myshiptracking.com noted that Uluda Princess left Japan for Fiji in mid-May and reached Suva on June 1.

The ship travels at an average speed of 10.5 knots and can travel up to 13.6 nautical miles per hour.

According to international shipping records, the 62-metre long and 14-metre wide Uluda Princess was built in Japan in 1992.

Among other vessels, Interlink Shipping also operates, MV Ohana, MV Yavirau and Northern Star.

Recently, the company has spearheaded campaigns for the protection of Fiji’s reefs, oceans and traditional qoliqoli and warned against the use of fast ferries.
