The Fiji Under 20 rugby team embarked on their journey to New Zealand yesterday, bidding farewell to their loved ones at the Nadi International Airport.

The team is set to participate in the Oceania Rugby Under 20s Challenge in Auckland, where they will compete against teams from Tonga, Samoa, and the invitational side Moana Pasifika.

The tournament, which commences today, will feature players from last year’s Deans competition and provincial under 20 rugby teams.

The team also includes players such as Phillip Baselala from the Fijian Drua, making them a formidable side to contend with in the upcoming matches.

In an interview with Oceania Rugby News, Elite Pathways & Performance manager Bill Gadolo expressed the Fijian pathway’s focus on developing age-grade talent for the modern game, which includes providing exposure to travel, adaptability, and competing in short turnaround tournaments.

He also extended a warm welcome to Oceania Rugby and Moana Pasifika for engaging with Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa.

“Fiji’s preparations began in December of last year, with the final team selection taking place in early January 2024 for the Oceania U20 Challenge and U20s Aotearoa Super Competition,” Gadolo said.

“This is all in preparation for the upcoming Junior World Cup to be held in South Africa from June 29 to July 19.”
