Fiji Police have confirmed two more fatalities on the country’s roads following separate accidents in Navosa and Lautoka.

In the first incident on Thursday evening, a 46-year-old farmer from Wauosi died after the truck he was travelling in veered off the road and plunged down a slope along Nasaucoko Farm Road in Navosa.

The truck, driven by a 47-year-old farmer of the same village, was heading towards Nadi with seven passengers seated in the rear tray. As the vehicle lost control, a 33-year-old farmer and an 18-year-old student jumped out and managed to pull others from the wreckage.

A passing motorist transported the injured to Navosa Hospital, where the 46-year-old man was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two women, aged 40 and 21, remain admitted at Sigatoka Hospital, while the driver is being treated at Lautoka Aspen Hospital. The rest of the passengers have been treated and discharged.

In a separate accident, an 85-year-old man from Rarawai, Ba, died early yesterday following a crash at Teidamu near Lautoka. He had been travelling with his 58-year-old son, who was driving, when their vehicle veered off the road around midday yesterday.

Both were taken to Lautoka Hospital by a passing taxi and kept under observation. The elderly man later succumbed to his injuries.

Police investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
