Two women died in a crash along Naboutini yesterday, pushing the national road toll to 67 for the year, up from 54 for the same period last year.
Police say the rising deaths reflect the ongoing failure by both drivers and pedestrians to follow basic safety rules.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said the public must change its attitude if the country is to avoid further tragedies.
“Authorities are issuing safety reminders that continue to fall on deaf ears,” he said.
“People need to move away from the mind-set that they will only comply with road rules, when they see police or LTA.”
He said resistance to enforcement measures was putting lives at risk.
“There are complaints made about the portable cameras, radar operations and traffic stops, not realising these are being done for everyone’s safety and a reminder to be safe.
“Work with authorities, not against us, so we can prevent further loss of lives.”
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the deaths of the two women saying one of them died at the scene. “The second victim is a woman; she was a passenger in the same car driven by the woman who died at the scene.”
Investigations continue.
