Two men charged with aggravated robbery were denied bail when they appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Lagani Rabukawaqa and Saimoni Macedru were produced in court where the prosecution objected to bail and sought time to file a proper response.
The court granted the prosecution until January 6 to formalise its position.
Tobia Ravuiwa, from the Legal Aid Commission, appeared for Mr Rabukawaqa and applied for leave to file a formal bail application. He told the court that based on disclosures, his client was arrested following identification.
Mr Ravuiwa submitted his client had an alibi and that his sister is prepared to confirm Mr Rabukawaqa was at home at the time of the alleged incident.
He further informed the court the accused is seeking bail to enable him to apply for further tertiary education at a Polytech institute where his father is a lecturer.
Despite the submissions, bail was denied for both accused as the prosecution’s objection is still pending before the court.
Mr Rabukawaqa and Mr Macedru face a joint charge of aggravated robbery.
It is alleged that earlier this month they robbed a 50-year-old man of his watch and nine dollars in cash at Top Shop in Raiwai, Suva.
The case is adjourned to January 16 while the accused men are back at the remand centre.
