TWO grandfathers, one aged 80 and the other 69, were among the 12 people charged with 27 counts of sexual offences last month.
Two of the accused were juveniles charged in separate cases, of the rape of a seven-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl.
The 80-year-old man was charged with four counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault of his 12-year-old granddaughter. In a separate incident, the 69-year-old man was charged with three counts of rape of his 9-year-old granddaughter.
Children made up the bulk of victims, which was outlined in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (ODPP) Rape and Sexual Offences statistics for November released yesterday.
The ODPP stated that a 38-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 16-year-old niece, while a 33-year-old man faced charges of rape and defilement of his 15-year-old niece.
The ODPP also listed another incident where a 48-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 16-year-old nephew.
Other incidents included a 48-year-old man charged with the rape of a 28-year-old woman. A 23-year-old man was also charged with rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.
And in another case, a 31-year-old man was charged with the rape of a 19-year-old woman and separately charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
The ODPD stated that two cases were discontinued after Nolle Prosequi were filed due to insufficient evidence.
“There were 12 accused persons charged with 27 counts of sexual offences; of the 12 accused persons, two were juveniles,” the media update stated.
There were also 12 victims recorded across the indictments, the majority being minors.
“There were 12 victims of whom nine victims were under the age of 18 years, there were 10 female victims and two male victims.”
The ODPP noted the statistics represented only the cases that advanced to the stage of formal indictment.
