THE people of Nabouono Village in Udu are seeking permission from authorities to harvest a turtle as part of their traditional presentation to the upcoming Macuata Provincial Council meeting.
Village spokesperson Joji Leweniqila said the community wants to honour the traditional protocols that accompanies such events.
“The turtle is a token of appreciation during traditional customs,” he said.
“We have not been fishing for turtles for the past two years because there was a tabu (prohibition) in place.”
Mr Leweniqila said the request was made in respect of the cultural significance of the turtle in Macuata’s traditional ceremonies.
The council meets next Wednesday and Thursday.
“We are seeking authorisation to harvest the turtle for the Macuata Provincial Council meeting.
“We cannot give anything in return when they give their appreciation.”
Mr Leweniqila said preparations for the meeting are progressing well, with villagers working together to host the event.
“Renovation was done to 16 homes,” he said, adding that the village is ready to welcome delegates to the council meeting.
