Propelled forward to success by the power of one vision, one canoe and one Fiji is how Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission, Josaia Tuinamata described their task at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Speaking at their thanksgiving dinner held at Hall A of the Vodafone Arena last Saturday, Tuinamata, also known as ‘Master Joe’, acknowledged the work of the large Fijian contingent to the Games.

“One vision, one canoe, one Fiji. Together we paddle forward and guided by our values, inspired by our ancestors, united by our commitment to inspire Fiji through sports,” Tuinamata stated.

In acknowledging the work of the athletes who brought home 27 gold, 30 silver and 24 bronze medals, he shared the virtuous qualities that carried them through.

“After months of planning, preparation and sacrifice, we came together in Palau, not just to compete but to represent our country with pride, integrity and heart and tonight we are here to celebrate not just the medals and victories, but the spirit, unity and resilience that carried us through,” he said.

“Palau is more than a competition. It was a journey, a journey of growth, team work and national pride.

“We faced challenges, we made memories, and we stood together as one, Team Fiji. So tonight, we give thanks to the Almighty for safe travel, for new friendship, for personal best and for every moment that brought us closer together as a team and as a nation.”

Tuinamata was announced as Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission in late January, taking up the role with a broad experience in athletics and weightlifting.

At the time, he told FASANOC it was an honour to be entrusted with the role and expressed his commitment towards working closely with the athletes.
