Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva told Parliament yesterday that Fiji now has around 240,000 registered vehicles on its roads, as the Land Transport Authority (LTA) works to modernize the nation’s vehicle inspection and compliance systems.

Mr. Tuinaceva said the rapid growth in vehicle numbers over the past decade had outpaced inspection capacity, prompting the LTA to expand its network of authorized motor vehicle inspection agencies nationwide.

“Mr. Speaker, our vehicle population has expanded significantly over the past decade — a total of around 240,000 registered vehicles on our roads at this stage,” Mr. Tuinaceva said.

“However, inspection capacity has not grown at the same pace. To address this imbalance, the LTA is expanding the network of authorized motor vehicle inspector agencies across the country through a controlled outsourcing model.”

He explained that the new inspection model focuses on three key areas — accessibility and efficiency, enhanced compliance, and partnership and accountability.

“We are building a land transport system that prioritizes safety, is modern, responsive, and inclusive — considering the transportation needs of all regions, from urban dwellers to the most remote residents,” he told Parliament.

The Assistant Minister said the LTA’s quality management systems were also being strengthened, particularly for public service vehicle (PSV) operators.

“All PSV operators must maintain a valid Quality Management System (QMS) certification. This certifies that their fleet adheres to routine maintenance schedules, mechanical checks, and safety protocols that meet LTA’s technical standards,” Mr. Tuinaceva explained.
