At 96 years old, Turaga Na Tui Vuda, Ratu Eparama Kitione Tavaiqia, is proving that age is no barrier to vision, launching a tourism transport business that is now partnering with one of Fiji’s leading operators, Rosie Tours.

The company, Optimistic Tours and Transfer, was established to create sustainable economic opportunities for the people of Vuda and support long-term development within the Vanua o Vuda. Operating from the historic Viseisei Village, the business is already making its mark in the tourism sector.

A major milestone for the company has been securing a transport services contract with Rosie Tours, strengthening its presence in Fiji’s competitive tourism industry. The partnership has also opened doors for broader community involvement, including support for village tours in Viseisei.

The idea for the business was first conceived in 2018 when the Tui Vuda identified opportunities in the growing tourism sector. Despite his advanced age, he remained committed to bringing the concept to life, culminating in the company becoming fully operational.

To kickstart the venture, the Tui Vuda personally invested in a fleet of five tourism-standard vehicles, including three 15-seater Toyota Hiace vans, a Toyota Prado, and a Toyota Innova—all now actively servicing clients.

Day-to-day operations are supported by Mr Meli Tora, who works closely with the Tui Vuda to ensure smooth management of the business.

Mr Tora said the chief was determined to establish a venture that would benefit his people during his lifetime and continue to support future generations.

The initiative is already creating employment opportunities, with more than 20 jobs expected through village tour operations managed under Vanua o Vuda Holdings.

The collaboration with Rosie Tours highlights how traditional leadership and modern business partnerships can work together to drive community-based tourism and economic growth.
