The absence of a police report following the alleged assault of Sakiasi Radravu on the night of April 23 has come under scrutiny.

The postmortem findings are not consistent with allegations of assault and police involvement, says Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.

Mr Tudravu said no police report was lodged at the time of the alleged incident which he described as a critical gap in the investigation into Radravu’s death.

“Nobody reported the matter,” he said.

“People are coming out now when he died.

“If there was a report, we could investigate and send him to medical for him to be reviewed.

“In the absence of that report, and in the absence of medical report to confirm the assault and the post-mortem which was done three months later which is not consistent to the allegation and the involvement of the police officers.”

He said the only way forward would be for the file to be submitted to a resident magistrate for direction on whether further investigation was required.

Mr Tudravu said police were currently only able to pursue internal disciplinary action against officers alleged to have been involved in the incident.
