The chiefly village of Tubou on Lakeba in Lau has begun solemn traditional preparations for the installation of Ratu Tevita Kapaiwai Lutunauga Uluilakeba Mara, Tui Nayau, Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau, a significant cultural event steeped in Lauan history.

Delegations from across the Lau Group have arrived with traditional gifts and offerings, converging on the chiefly residence in Vatuwaqa in a formal process of unity and reverence.

The vanua has entered a state of sacred observance, marked by silence across the village green and the ceremonial preparation of sacred foods. This week, warriors and community representatives from across Lau gathered in Tubou, bearing traditional iyau ni vanua — symbolic presentations of loyalty.

Their arrival, despite long sea journeys, was received with honour.

“Their presence is a powerful display of loyalty and support,” a village elder said.

One of the key moments was the preparation of qoli sirovi, a ceremonial fish that had been taboo for 12 years. Its inclusion symbolised the lifting of restrictions and readiness for a new chiefly era.

More ceremonies are expected in the coming days, leading to the formal installation of the Tui Nayau, a role that carries immense significance for the Lau Group and Fiji’s wider traditional leadership structure.
