Most National Farmers Union (NFU) members have secured their own canecutters resulting in good progress of harvesting, says president Surendra Lal.
He described their member’s commitment and dedication as one that deserved to be recognised.
“Despite all the hardships canefarmers face as a result of the two cyclones that hit Vanua Levu and the COVID impacts, they have all stayed true to their duties,” he said.
“They have gone out of their way to find canecutters and catered for all necessary expenses to bring in labourers and provide for their stay. This is not easy considering what we’ve all gone through since early this year and cane payments still pending from last year.”
Mr Lal said another contributing factor to good progress was the usage of harvesters in most flat land areas.
“However, we are concerned about the farmers in Wainikoro and Daku areas because they started later than the farmers in Labasa and Seaqaqa. So we do hope they finish harvesting on time.
“The delayed harvesting in these areas was due to damaged railways caused by TC Yasa when it swept through Macuata last year.”
