In the true spirit of regional co-operation and maritime partnership, the Republic of Fiji Navy offered assistance to the Cook Islands Maritime Police.

According to the RFN’s social media update the cooperation was made possible through the support of the Australian Pacific Maritime Security Partnership program where three RFN personnel supported navigation and bridge-keeping capabilities within the Cook Islands Maritime Police boat Te Kukupa 2.

The navy stated this collaboration came as a response to manpower issues faced by the Pacific neighbour.

“The deployment of personnel from the Fiji Navy, namely Sub-Lieutenant Baivatu, Ensign Sokotiviti, and Petty Officer Koroi, marks a significant step towards partnership and collaboration amongst Pacific maritime forces in the region,” the navy said.

“Sub-Lt Baivatu, Ensign Sokotiviti, and PO Koroi are equipped to provide the necessary support requested.

“This collaborative effort between the Fiji navy and the Cook Islands Maritime Police may be a catalyst for joint efforts between Pacific islands under the Australian initiative Pacific Maritime Security Partnership program.”

The navy said the sharing of expertise and resources highlighted the close ties that existed among Pacific island nations and they remained dedicated to fostering stronger maritime partnerships across the region and support its neighbours in need.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Navy also hosted China’s People’s Liberation Army deputy chief of Joint Staff Central Military Commission, General Xu Qiling yesterday who is in the country to attend the 2023 Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) conference.

RFN said General Xu visited the headquarters and took a short trip onboard RFNS Kacau, a hydrographic and multi-role vessel given by China in 2019.
