A tropical disturbance north of Fiji is expected to intensify into a cyclone, but current forecasts indicate it is unlikely to make direct landfall over Fiji or Vanuatu.
The system, identified as TD11F, is currently located over waters north of the Fiji basin between Vanuatu and Fiji, moving south-southwest at about 13 kilometres per hour.
Weather officials say the system is forecast to strengthen into a tropical cyclone over open waters, with winds expected to reach between 165 and 185 kilometres per hour.
The centre of the system is projected to pass approximately 300 to 400 kilometres west of Viti Levu by Tuesday afternoon or evening.
Forecasters note that current steering currents do not favour a direct landfall on either Fiji or Vanuatu.
However, authorities are continuing to monitor the system closely as it develops, with the potential for associated impacts such as strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough seas expected in parts of the country as it tracks southwards.
