The top student for a school in rural Fiji is producing results that dwarfs its remote location and the challenges she faced as a child living with a father who is unemployed.

Adi Litia Matamalumu, Tavua District Secondary School’s star pupil, had teachers and the community brimming with pride when she racked up a score of 382 out of 400 in the Year 13 examination.

The school is celebrating because her phenomenal marks broke every record at Tavua District Secondary School (TDSS) since the school’s founding in 1998 and secured the Dux Award for the year 2023.

Adi Litia scored 90 in English, 100 in pure mathematics, 97 in Physics, 95 in Chemistry and 91 in Biology.

In a year marked by challenges and uncertainties, the aspiring pilot’s achievements have emerged as a beacon of hope for her schoolmates and the surrounding community.

“She was a very dedicated, very hardworking student. She has become an inspiration for us to all,”

A. Krishna, the vice principal and Adi Litia’s mathematics teacher proudly said.

A devout Christian, Adi Litia attributed her achievements to divine guidance, hard work and commitment.

She also acknowledged the support of the Tavua district family, from its administrative team to her fellow students, and thanked them for their role in her journey.
