FIJI has taken a major step towards strengthening specialist skin health services, with three local doctors expected to register as dermatologists next year, says Minister for Health Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu.

Speaking at the inaugural Pacific Islands Dermatology conference in Suva yesterday, Dr Lalabalavu welcomed regional and international experts and praised their commitment to improving dermatology care across the Pacific.

“I am indeed privileged to be here this morning to officiate in this inaugural Pacific Islands Dermatology conference,” he said.

Referring to the conference theme, “Advancing Skin Health in the Pacific”, Dr Lalabalavu said he had been impressed by the dedication shown by organisers and participants.

“I could feel the passion and the drive to push for strengthening skin health in the Pacific.”

He thanked organisers for bringing together specialists from around the world, saying their participation demonstrated a commitment to professional development and better patient care.

“Success in healthcare delivery requires constant learning and adaptation, networking and sharing of knowledge and experiences.”

Dr Lalabalavu highlighted Fiji’s support for dermatology training through the establishment of the Pacific Dermatology Training Centre at Tamavua Twomey Hospital and its partnership with Fiji National University in recognising postgraduate diploma and master’s qualifications.

“Fiji now has three master graduates in dermatology and should be registering as dermatologist in 2027.

“This is a remarkable achievement as they will provide the much needed specialised Dermatology care across the country strengthening our dermatology services nationwide.”

He encouraged delegates to use the conference to build professional connections and collaborations, while thanking the organising committee, including ILDS, PDL and the local team, for making the event possible.
