Former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, former Fiji Airways executive general of Corporate Affairs Shaenaz Voss, Fiji Airways general manager Safety, Security and Quality Sharun Ali and Fiji Airlines T/A Fiji Link, all facing a total 66 counts of various charges sanctioned by the DPP, have been granted a $10,000 non-cash bail by the Magistrate’s Court in Nadi.
While granting bail, Magistrate Semi Babitu told the accused to surrender their passports, provide two sureties, adhere to stop-departure orders and not interfere with prosecution witnesses.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with 11 counts of unlawful carriage of a firearm on an aircraft, 11 counts of receiving a corrupt benefit, 11 counts of breach of trust by a person employed in the public service and 11 counts of abuse of office.
Ms Voss is charged with three counts of giving a corrupt benefit while Sharun Ali is charged with 11 counts of giving a corrupt benefit.
Additionally, Ms Voss, Mr Ali and Fiji Airline T/A Fiji Link are charged with five counts of breach of mandatory reporting of security occurrences and three counts of breach of airline security.
The accused persons are charged under the Civil Aviation (Security) Act 1994, Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations 1994 and Crimes Act 2009.
Acting Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions) Laisani Tabuakuro did not object to bail, however, requested a cash bail bond of $50,000 for the accused persons, stop-departure orders be imposed on the trio and that they stay away from prosecution witnesses.
“We emphasise that Mr Ali stays away from the prosecution witnesses as he continues to be employed by Fiji Airways and the majority of the prosecution witnesses are employed at Fiji Link, worked under Ali and continue to work under him,” she said.
Ms Tabuakuro requested six weeks to submit the second phase of disclosures.
The case will be called again on the 14th of November.
