We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Hank Arts, a remarkable individual who served as a former publisher and general manager of the Fiji Times. Last Sunday, God’s hand touched him, as he slept. He called him home. Death has taken away a genuinely warm individual, more importantly a loving husband and father and deprived so many others, including all of us, of a good colleague and a friend.

While we mourn the loss of a colleague, we pay a tribute and celebrate a life that was well-lived.

Hank’s dedication and passion for his work left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His leadership at the Fiji Times not only shaped the newspaper but also influenced many lives positively. His contributions to journalism and the community were truly invaluable.

Hank was also a staunch advocate for corporate social responsibility, actively encouraging sponsorships and charitable activities across society, sports, cultural organisations, and causes like the Cancer Society. His strength of character and compassion were evident in all his endeavour.

In 2018, under Hank’s leadership, The Fiji Times editor-in-chief received the News Media Executive of the Year award at the PANPA Awards in Sydney, Australia. This international recognition underscored the journalistic standards and excellence of the Fiji Times during his tenure.

Even amid the darkest days of The Fiji Times, Hank always remained unfazed. In his own quiet and calm manner, he showed how to work through challenging times and to carry everyone along. His integrity and commitment to maintaining the integrity of The Fiji Times, reporting without fear or favour, were truly commendable. He faced all challenges with passion and resolve, rising above them with grace.

As we reflect on his life, we remember a man who was committed to excellence and who had a profound impact on the media landscape in Fiji. He took the Fiji Times to greater heights, reinforcing the belief that ‘Fiji without The Fiji Times is unthinkable.’ His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

This is particularly a difficult and painful time for his family. In extending to them the Fiji Times company’s heartfelt condolences, we wish them courage and strength to bear this irreparable loss.
