Booms to collect rubbish have been placed in Nabukalou Creek.

This is part of an initiative between Trash Boom Pacific, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Suva City Council (SCC).

The placing of the trash boom is part of proactive steps to restore the once-picturesque Nabukalou Creek, said SCC.

“Funded by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, this effort reflects UNDP Pacific’s focus on promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in the region,” states SCC.

“This initiative aims to tackle the ongoing issue of plastic and waste pollution in this strategically important waterway.”

The trash boom acts as a filter, preventing the downstream movement of debris, plastics, and other pollutants.

This significantly improves water quality, benefiting both marine life and public health.
